Museum het Bolwerk

The border region between Zeeland and Flanders has a fascinating history. During international conflicts, the area has regularly found itself on the front line.
Remnants of these wars can still be found in the landscape on both sides of the Flemish/Zeeland border to this day. Museum Het Bolwerk shows how the inhabitants of the region have defended themselves against various enemies over the centuries.
The story begins at the Roman castellum in Aardenburg and ends at the bunkers of the Second World War.
The collection focuses on the period of the Eighty Years' War with its forts, redoubts and fortified towns, known as the Staats-Spaanse Linies (State-Spanish Lines). The remaining forts and redoubts have now lost their military function and have been transformed into beautiful nature reserves where rare animals and plants thrive.
